Data protection and business continuity for SAP solutions in the Azure cloud

Softline

The solution for those who value the continuity of business-critical applications.

Business processes continuity is vital for many companies. Businesses who use ERP systems such as SAP can suffer severe losses if the system goes offline. Even a simple power outage, not to mention cyberattacks and other disasters, have already caused loss of critical data, service interruptions, and real financial damage for companies.

IT team can't always prevent or fix problems, so it's crucial to provide a reliable disaster recovery plan in case of a disaster. Using the Azure public cloud makes it possible to speed up and often to reduce the cost of creating a backup site for SAP systems, which is necessary to ensure disaster resilience and business continuity.

Four stages of SAP disaster recovery enabled by Azure

The process of creating a disaster-resilient SAP solution consists of 4 steps: pre-project audit and readiness assessment, development of a statement of work, development of solutions (project design), and creating these solutions.

  1. Audit and assessment of readiness to switch to the Azure backup site

The audit stage defines the success of the project as a whole, helping to understand the configuration of the existing IT environment and develop a migration roadmap without the risk of disrupting business processes. An inventory of all SAP applications is carried out, and the auditors determine the deployment modes (two- or three-level), versions, patches, sizes, and I/O metrics of SAP components.

  1. Development of Statement of Work

Developing the statement of work means defining requirements applicable to the architecture and location of SAP systems and components, as well as related systems and their users. The functional part of the statement of work includes requirements to the network infrastructure, interaction with associated systems, service quality levels (at least RTO and RPO), information security, monitoring, backup, project stages, and required documents.

  1. Solution development

Azure Site Recovery (ASR) is considered a fundamental tool for SAP recovery in Azure. In this solution, all changes in storage systems of SAP databases in the local environment are tracked and replicated to Azure at specified time intervals. In case of disaster, a VM failover to the cloud is performed.

  1. Building a solution

Proof of Concept

As part of the development process, Proof of concept (PoC) solutions must be tested. It allows you to ensure that the solution as a whole is feasible and to identify bottlenecks that are related to each specific situation.

Test recovery to Azure (Failover)

A mandatory stage of every project to ensure disaster resilience and SAP projects are not an exception. Softline engineers start with test recovery to the Azure cloud (Failover) and then test the recovery from the cloud back to the on-premise environment (Failback).

Test recovery to a local environment (Failback)

After a Failover test, ASR is reconfigured for reverse replication to the local on-premise environment. At first, a test segment is allocated in the local on-premise environment, where all models of network infrastructure, virtualization, and storage systems are recreated. The ASR then switches to reverse replication and replicates the SAP HANA systems to the local test bench.

Deployment plan

For various SAP system, the deployment procedure can vary significantly depending on the initial conditions.

Azure Site Recovery:

  • Reduces the infrastructure costs by eliminating the expenses on backup equipment. You will be less dependent on the staff because the service will be recovered without human intervention.
  • Ensures high service availability. You can deploy cloud services in different countries in various regions, reliably protecting your applications from any incidents of different scales.
  • Guarantees disaster recovery. Scheduled shutdowns or emergency situations will no longer result in reduced availability or loss of data and money.
  • Is easy to deploy and to manage. Demonstrate the order of actions only once, and Azure will perform the rest on its own.
